Gayle Kaufman – NSF Collaborative RUI Award

The Office of Grants and Contracts congratulates Nancy and Erwin Maddrey Professor of Sociology and Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS), Gayle Kaufman, on a National Science Foundation grant (1850239). The $355,097 Collaborative RUI: Research in Undergraduate Institutions award with Associate Professor D’Lane Compton of the University of New Orleans, funds “Marriage Attitudes in the 21st Century.”
The three-year project will explore marriage attitudes and decision-making of heterosexuals and LGBTQ adults in the time following the 2015 Marriage Equality decision by the Supreme Court. Six Davidson College student researchers will train in research design, ethics, data management and manuscript preparation as part of this funded project.
Professor Kaufman is an expert in the areas of gender equality and parental leave policy and recently published her second book, Fixing Parental Leave (NYU Press, 2020), which draws on research from Sweden and the U.K. to offer potential policy solutions for the U.S. Professor Kaufman involves students in her research and has published four articles co-authored with undergraduate students in the past five years.
